Jodhpur 2017


















Maharajas from Rajasthan have a title but usually don’t work. They’re families recently have converted their private homes (palaces) into hotels. Ratan Villas is where we stayed last night. We met the Maharaj and he let me take these photos. He’s 85 years old and he has grandchildren in university. The hope is that they take over the family name and protect the homes for future generations.  We took our first Indian train ride from Jaipur to Jodhpur.

Badges! Badges! I don't need no stinking Badges!

What has become of me?  I've become that mom who lives vicariously through her 7 year old daughter.  Don't get me wrong.  I haven't signed her up for Toddlers and Tiaras or Honey Boo Boo's Texas Choice Pageants.  I signed her up for Brownies! Why? Girl Guides? Brownies? what have I done? Well, I have a problem.  I love badges.  I want to get badges...lots of them.  In fact I may buy some on Ebay...no kidding. Why badges? Well, I used to be a brownie from 1977-1979 (7-9yrs old).  I wore my brownie dress, scarf, beret with pride.  I enjoyed my Wednesday nights at St. Cuthbert's Church.  It was my first time in a church (I'm a Hindu and didn't know until I stepped into a church that I wasn't a Christian...that's a whole other post!) Brownies was a time I could do arts and crafts, sing songs, cook and bake and play with friends not from my school.  I did this for years.  Every week I would happily skip to the church and be a brownie. 4 carry-ons 4 backpacks 4 weeks

Well...this is a first.  We are all taking carry on sized suitcases and one backpack each....that's it.  Even I'm a little stunned that we're doing this.  But after seeing Leela pack everything she needed in a 20" suitcase, I'm pretty sure we will be fine. Our trans-atlantic flight allows for us all to have up to 23kg each so why the small luggage?  Our itinerary within India includes 6 internal flights on small jets which only allow for a maximum of 15kg each.  So, we really can't stuff too much anyways.  Don't worry folks...I'll be buying another suitcase on the way back for all the shopping (John need not worry himself about these things). The most important items; anti-diarrhea medication, gravol, after bite, Deet 30% or more, wet ones anti-bacterial wipes, wipes, water tablets/water filtration mug, sunscreen, anti-histamines and asthma medication.  It may sound like over kill...but just remember I'm travelling with the worlds greatest

Elephanta Caves, Mumbai

You know when you watch the news and hear about a ferry boat capsizes in the Arabian Sea? Well today I felt like that could be us! Monsoon rains, dodgy wooden boat, not enough life jackets, kids puking, people praying. Full experience. Well worth it to see the Elephanta Caves! Temples dating back to 200BC carved in stone depicting Lord Shiva. Priceless.
